Erbium, chromium, and ytterbium Co-doped phosphate glass are widely used because of their excellent properties. It is the best glass material for a 1535nm laser. It has a better transmission capacity in the atmosphere, but it is safe for human eyes. It is suitable for ranging, medical treatment, scientific research, and other purposes.

Erbium-doped glass lasers doped with Er3 +, Yb3 +, and Cr3 + are nearly 1.5 μ M provides a useful coherent source, which is relatively safe for human eyes. It is widely used in the fields of lidar and ranging, optical fiber communication, laser surgery, and so on. Although considerable progress has been made in the development of InGaAs laser diode pump source, Xe flash lamp will continue to be used as the pump source of erbium glass laser because of its high reliability, low cost, and simple system design. Since about half of the flash lamp radiation energy is emitted in the visible and near-infrared (IR) range, a second sensitizer Cr3 + is introduced into Yb Er laser glass to make use of this energy.
